Finding a Great Show While You Are in New York

I will be headed to the big apple here in a few weeks and I am looking for some cool things to do while I am there. I am not a real big fan of Broadway, but I have heard that there are some pretty cool shows there. I heard that show Turn off the Dark was pretty cool from a friend of mine but that was a couple months back so I’m not even sure if the play is still going on and don’t want to sound like a total by asking for tickets to show that is no longer playing. That would be awful. Are there any other plays or activities that people can recommend to me or a place where I can go to read reviews and things like that? I am naive as to what to expect when I get there but I am open to trying some new things while I am there.
